Declaring the Major

Eligibility to Declare the Major

You are eligible to declare the major in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics if you have met ALL of the following criteria:

  1. Completion of Math 1A & Math 1B (or equivalent) with averages grades of at least "C"*. For our policy on Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and A-Level Exam scores, please see High School Exam Credits

  2. Completion of Math 53, Math 54 or Math 56, and Math 55 (or equivalent) with minimum grades of "C"* in each, or completion of two of those three courses (with minimum grades of "C" in each) and currently taking the third.  If declaring while currently taking the final lower-division requirement, that course will need to be completed with a letter grade of at least "C".

(For double+ majors only: Note that we will accept Physics 89 in lieu of Math 54 for students with a double major in Physics, provided that the grade is at least a C.  We will accept EECS 16A plus EECS 16B in lieu of Math 54 for students with a double major in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, provided that both grades are at least a C.  We will accept Computer Science 70 in lieu of Mathematics 55 for students with a double major in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, provided that the grade is at least a C. In order for these alternate courses to be accepted, the student must be adding the Mathematics/Applied Mathematics major after Physics/CS/EECS has already been declared. Math cannot be the first major added.)

  3. If you have already taken one or more upper division math courses, you should have a grade point average of at least 2.0 from those courses completed at the time of declaration. Note, however, that you do not need to have completed an upper division math course in order to declare.*

Any alterations to the above requirements must be authorized (in writing) by the Head Major Advisor, upon referral from a Staff Advisor

*PLEASE NOTE: Prerequisite coursework taken in Spring 2020, Fall 2020, Spring 2021, or Summer 2021 may satisfy declaration requirements with a Passing "P" grade though students must have at least one prerequisite for declaring with a letter grade and average of 2.0 - or - if all prerequisite coursework was taken in Spring 2020, Fall 2020, Spring 2021, or Summer 2021 and a P grade was earned, students may declare upon taking at least one upper division requirement with a letter grade of C or better and an average of 2.0. Mailing List for Math Community & Intended Majors

Major Declaration Procedures

Download the Application for the Major, which you can find below. The form is a fillable PDF. Fill it out, save it, and then email it, along with any supporting documents (such as equivalency evaluations for courses taken outside UC Berkeley, Double Major Petition, etc) to the following email address: declare@math.berkeley.edu

Note that double majors require signatures from both your departments. If we are the first to sign your Double Major Petition, we will send it back to you to take to your second department. If your Double Major Petition is already signed by your first department, we can forward it to L&S Advising for final approval.)
